Marbella is used to collecting awards for its beaches, hotels and restaurants. This week, the recognition came from somewhere less glamorous but arguably more important. At the 8th edition of the Best Spanish Hospitals Awards, held in Madrid on 8 October, Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella was named the best private hospital in Spain in the value-based health assessment category, for its care of hernia patients.

The hospital was also a finalist in maternal and child care processes among large private hospitals. It is the second time in three editions that Quirónsalud Marbella has taken the value-based care award, after winning the same category in 2024.

🏥 What the Award Means

The Best Spanish Hospitals Awards, known as the BSH, are organised by the consultancy Higia Benchmarking. Unlike rankings built on reputation surveys, they rely on objective data from hospital activity. Public and private hospitals are compared in groups of similar size and complexity, and each is measured on quality of care, patient safety, appropriateness, efficiency and risk-adjusted outcomes, with more than 5,000 indicators per hospital.

Value-based health assessment is one of the optional categories that hospitals can enter. In simple terms, it looks at the results that matter to patients, such as recovery and quality of life, relative to the resources needed to achieve them. In 2026, the category focused on two processes: hernia and COPD. Quirónsalud Marbella came out on top among private hospitals for hernia care.

“It is a genuine check-up of the state of clinical management in Spain,” said Sergi Hidalgo of Higia Benchmarking at the ceremony, describing the awards as a tool for hospitals to measure themselves rigorously.

📍 About Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella

Located on Avenida Severo Ochoa, in central Marbella, Quirónsalud Marbella describes itself as the flagship private hospital in the province of Málaga. With around half a century of history, it covers some 75 clinical specialties and is part of a network of associated medical centres in Marbella and Fuengirola. It has a long track record of treating international patients, a key point in a city where a large share of residents come from abroad.

The hospital belongs to Quirónsalud, which, together with its parent company Fresenius-Helios, is one of the leading healthcare groups in Europe. In Spain, the group has 57 hospitals, more than 180 healthcare centres and over 55,000 professionals.

🩺 Healthcare on the Costa del Sol: A Stronger Network

The award comes in a year of major investment in healthcare around Marbella. In March 2026, the public Hospital Costa del Sol completed an expansion of more than €100 million, adding around 40,000 m² across two new buildings, 16 operating theatres, a radiotherapy and nuclear medicine unit, new day hospitals and an assisted reproduction unit.

Alongside the public system and Quirónsalud Marbella, the coast between Málaga and Estepona has a dense network of private hospitals and specialist clinics, many of them with international patient services. Wellness and preventive medicine are growing too, with projects like Oakmond Marbella, the longevity resort planned on the former Incosol site.

🏡 Why It Matters When You Buy in Marbella

For many international buyers, the decision to move to Marbella is made with the heart: the climate, the sea and the lifestyle. But the decision to stay is often made with the head. Schools, connections and, above all, healthcare are what turn a holiday home into a primary residence.

This is especially true for families with young children, for buyers who split their year between Marbella and another country, and for those planning to retire on the Costa del Sol. Knowing that a nationally recognised hospital is minutes from home is a real part of the value of living here, even if it never appears in a property listing.

Healthcare checklist for buyers moving to Marbella

  • Check the driving time from the property to the nearest hospital emergency department.
  • Review your private health insurance and which hospitals it covers in Spain.
  • If you will be a resident, ask about registering with the public health system.
  • Ask about international patient services and consultations in your language.
  • Keep your medical records and prescriptions translated and up to date.
